I think this is also what Jo was explaining? I will try this. I tried once earlier with success but I have to work on not anticipating the touch when she goes for my hand and A, touching her nose for her or B, moving the hand away when she's trying to touch it. I'm going to try again in the morning and see how it goes.
You don't have to hold the hand down in front of the dog.
Lower it and mark as soon as the dog touches it.
If it licks first just withdraw the hand (no comment, no correction)and start over again.
AS SOON AS the dog makes contact with it's nose, mark and reward.

That is what I do. The lick is usually directly after the touch. And it's quick, not like I'm holding my hand down and so she licks it since it's still there. I will have just marked and will be moving my hands to reach for the reward and she's already licking it. I just don't like when she licks the hand (after the touch, even) and was wondering if there was a way I could solve that. I may need to be faster about moving the hand after the mark, without anticipating the touch.

Yes, I am trying to explain what Jo did just with different words. Sometimes that helps me when I am having difficulty figuring something out.
And, Bob is 'THE' expert. I'm still learning most of this stuff. And he is sooooooooooooooo much older than me, he know lots of stuff. Why, he even knows what a gramaphone is.
Seriously tho, if you reward for licking, then you are marking for licking. I think if you keep doing it, the dog will stop the licking.
ps:
I was doing the same thing in moving my hand toward the dog in anticipation. Keep practicing and you will get it timed.

I'm sorry for the delay! I ended up semi-unexpectedly going out of town and have only just now been able to get to a computer to respond to the thread.
Since starting the thread, I've had just a couple of opportunities to try what has been suggested and it seemed to work - moving my hand away and marking for the good touches produced the response I've been looking for! I will keep practicing and I'm sure I'll have the timing down soon.
