My lab/pit mix goes to the beach with me several times a week, and gets in the water regularly. I normally just rinse him off well afterwards, and he doesn't seem to be having any problems with his skin or coat. Are there any other preventative measures I should be taking when it comes to the ocean water? I only bathe him with shampoo if he absolutely needs it, which is about twice a year. I don't take him swimming when there are jellyfish or leptosporiasis warnings. I also keep him out of fresh water when we are hiking due to leptosporiasis warnings on the island. Should I bathe him more often? He doesn't have a strong smell. His feet smell like corn chips, but I figure that will go away when I switch him to a raw diet (different thread).
I asked this board for beach safety tips about a month ago, and got great advice. I felt prepared for my dog's 1st beach outing and was able to relax and enjoy once we got there.
Using the silicone coat spray was a great idea---it really helped cut down on sand retention. I bathed my dog with a mild soap every evening and did not notice that he dragged a lot of sand into the house.
