I assume you mean similar to the AKC obedience scent discrimination work where the dog picks up and retrieves the last thing the handler touched?
I've seen several ways to train this which are effective.
The best one that appealed to me was a clicker scenario where the dog who was already trained on the command retrieve with dumbbells. The dog is presented with two dumbbells one that the handler touched and another that is clean. The dog is given the choice of picking up a dumbbell and when it selects or even looks at the correct one the behavior is marked. Once the dog gets to the point of selecting the right object each time start adding more objects, delayed starts, and different terrains.
I've also seen it done where the clean dumbbells are stuck to pegboard and the only correct option is to pick up the last dumbbell the handler set down. My dogs usually take a stuck object as I just need to jerk on this harder but I know several people who teach it this way.

LOL, I'm picturing your dog bringing you the entire pegboard.... "here! I can't get it off, so you'll have to take the whole thing mom!"
