I am curious to see how you train your dog to flip back into the fuss position. Say you are standing in correct Fuss position, dog is looking at you, and then you take a step backwards and to the right like a semicircle. How do you get the dog to keep their butt level with your leg? My dog wants to go back around me (the way I taught him) but the whole loop around me thing is not needed. Ideas?
I like mostly positive but my dog is a hard head so I am not opposed to yanking him around a little. I just want to be totally sure he knows what I want before I do that and at this point I do not think he understands and it's my fault because I am unsure how to teach it.
It's not so much yanking.
It's slight little pops to help him move backwards, combined with luring to get him moving in the correct direction so you can mark and reward.
Make sure the collar is high on his neck, hold the leash right at the point it clips, and just give little "nudges" on the collar to help him move backwards with you. Use a wall, fence, etc to keep him from swinging his butt around.
Between those little pops, and a little bit of luring, you'll be able to get a step or two backwards, in position, that you can then mark and reward.
Hmmm,
Turning to the left or to the right?
I ask because turning to the right the dog just follows. No?
The only time the dog needs to back up is turning to the left.
Hi sorry I've been away from the computer.. yes I mean a Flip Finish as well as going left (sharp left turn) where the dog's butt needs to stay against your leg not swing out and the dog needs to back up.
Oh and yes he heels well forward but not perfect, he has the tendency to forge quite a bit. I guess what I am trying to say is if I was standing with my left side against my dog and the dog was against the wall with his left side on the wall ....
and then I turned and faced the wall head on, how do I teach him instead of going around me just backing up and swinging his butt around? (sort of like a flip finish)
