I am just starting my 9 months old pup in formal obedience training (with a local schutzhund club). He has low prey drive but a pretty strong food drive. I have watched Flinks' dvd on drive building and I have tried to using tug (he likes tug) to get him train in drive more but still nothing works like food for him. So I was wondering if it is possible to use Flinks method with food? This might be an absurd question, but can I "play" with him with food (like the way people play with bite tube or ball on string?)
First of all I am no expert, but I do like the obedience phase. Utilizing your dogs food drive is a very good way to get started. You can make using food into a game by throwing your pieces of food along the ground for him to chase and call him back to you to chase another piece. At the same time you can build his drive for the tug and once you are happy with his drive for the tug you can start to bring the tug into your rewarding for the behaviour your happy with. You can then try to mix the two, using the food to help get the precision you want and then using a tug for a game at the end.
