It's so ironic with BSL when pits are indeed one of the most social breeds with humans. I don't let people pet my dogs on a walk (the bulldog mix would bite any adult male, he lunges at them without my corrections... we're working on it). I do make an exception with children if they ask. But then they are subject to one of my lectures on the proper way to approach a dog and the dangers of approaching an unknown dog. They probably regret asking and walk away thinking "she doesn't shut up". Interestingly enough it's the two Bully breed mixes who show the most affection bending their bodies in half with tail wagging and licking whilst the larger(GSD mix) one takes a pat on the head from my side but doesn't lick or seem to want the attention.
I tend to see both sides of the issue. Cicero happens to be very friendly and that is fine with me for the most part. I do wish that I had followed the not letting him intereact with strangers a when he was a pup because now he is so friendly that there are some days when he wants to drag me to every person he sees. I don't let him do it but it does get obnoxious.
