Type of vitamin E & dosage?

My dogs are all adult and 50-65 lbs in size.
I feed them twice a day and supplement their Orijen kibble with salmon oil and vitamin E.
The vitamin E is 200IU which is the smallest dosage I can get (I used to be able to get 100IU but can no longer find it). So they get one 200IU pill in their morning food and another 200IU in their evening food making their total daily dosage 400IU. The vitamin E is "mixed d-alpha tocopherols." They have been doing fine on this type and dosage.
I was purchasing their vitamin E and noticed a new brand on the shelf. It is made of d-alpha, beta, gamma, and delta tocopherols, which I believe from reading the forums here that this is superior to the plain d-alpha. However, it only comes in 400IU pills.
So should I switch to this new product and how would I dose my dogs? Should I give them one 400 IU pill per day, even though I give salmon oil twice per day? I think giving them two 400 IU pills per day might be excessive? Or stick to what I'm giving?
Thanks!

I have looked and looked for a thread that got a little more in-depth on vitamin e that listed all the things you mentioned.
I'll keep looking. I believe it was in '09. It can't be more than a year old.
It was another lady that seemed to know her stuff and Connie posting back and forth discussing the quality of different brands of E.

Yep, that is the thread I was refering to when I said "which I believe from reading the forums here that this is superior to the plain d-alpha"
I am currently giving the product I mentioned in that thread - 200 IU of mixed d-alpha (only) tocopherols twice daily.
I couldn't find a mention in that other thread about Vitamin E dosages - which I guess is my main question - should I give 400 IU of (d-alpha, beta, gamma, delta) once daily even though I give fish oil twice (so at one meal, they would have salmon oil with no E) or give 400 IU twice daily for a total of 800 IU/day, or just stick with the product I currently use which is 200 IU but d-alpha only.

I'm really not sure.
Some people, me too, like the vitamin E to directly accompany the salmon oil since we give it specifically to protect the goodies that are in it.
Then some would be fine with 400 IU once a day.
I honestly can't tell you which is better. Since E is stored in the body to be ready to use, I doubt you could tell a difference between each way of giving the dosage.
The happy medium would be to pierce the gel-cap and squeeze out 1/2 for the first meal and then give the other 1/2 with the other meal.
I don't think that vitamin E, even being fat soluble, is as dangerous about reaching a toxicity as other fat soluble vitamins. Still, I wouldn't go to 800 IU with that size dog.

I wouldn't either. E has not shown a toxic-OD level in dogs even at high lab doses, but still, as Michael points out, it is fat-soluble and not flushing out (like C); I'd rather go with 200-400 IU a day with that size dog.

Thanks guys, that's kind of what I was looking for. 800 IU *sounds* like a very high dose to me, but I was really only guessing. For all I knew I could have been severely under-dosing this whole time.
So no one really knows about one daily dose vs two daily doses, but the general consensus (at least of those participating in this thread ) is to give vitamin E with each serving of salmon oil.
I am wondering if this vitamin E (with all the different tocopherols) is so much better I should consider giving the dogs their entire daily dose of salmon oil and E at one of their meals.
Otherwise, maybe I'll just stick to what I'm doing now.
Oh, duh. I just thought of a better plan. I can ask the health food store where I saw the product if they can possibly order a 200 IU of that particular brand? that would be awesome.

I've been trying to supplement my dog's Orijen with the amounts of salmon oil and vitamin E as suggested, but vitamin capsules are just not working for us. He'll spit them across the room even if they're coated in peanut butter or cheese.
Anyone know a good source of liquid Vit E?
Thanks!

You can pierce and squeeze pretty easily, and you will probably also find that when the dog finds out that it's oil in there, he will eat them. It might take a few days of piercing a bit to get it across that it's not just solid capsule. (Eggs are similar with some dogs ... they play with them until SURPRISE! It's full of raw egg! This discovery happens under the couch in a carpeted room.)
You have liquid salmon oil?

Thanks, Connie, that's good advice. (Sometimes can't see the forest for the trees!)
I do have liquid salmon oil, and have no trouble getting the dog and cats to take that.
