Hi everyone: Got an update and spaying question. Luna is now
a year and a half. She is to be spayed Aug 10th, will remain at
the vets two days. Luna Flunked her OFA prelin, and yes, I'm still pssst about that. We are to return to Obedience class
August 20th for Beyond Manners CGC prep. Is 10 days a long
enough recovery time and can you guys fill me in on what I
can expect post op? I have taken two days off work so I can be
with her at home as she recovers. She is a high energy dog and
I can't imagine her being sedate for more than a few days, vet
says no running and jumping around for 10 days. Can't picture
her not running for 10 days but I'll do what I have to.
Thanks as always,
Betty Reavis
No running and jumping is pretty crucial in promoting fast healing. The thing to remember is that it's not just the external incision/stitches/staples you need to be concerned about, but also the internal ones.
I think the amount of healing time depends on each dog and how well their body recovers from things. If you really want to take the CGC I recommend waiting until after that to get her spayed.
My male had to get a small lump removed from his elbow. I got it done 2 weeks before a UKC trial. Well of course, the lump once they had shaved it was a lot bigger than they had previously thought. So the stitches ended up busting from just walking and they did not want to re-stitch just to have that happen again. So he spent 4 weeks with honey packs on his open hole in his leg recouperating, and could not participate in the UKC trial.
Niomi: Sorry you had such a bad experience with your dogs elbow
lump, you reminded me about busting stitches just walking, I forgot to mention Luna will also be having her dew claws removed.
I'm sure she'll have sore feet to. Our CGC class starts on
August 20 so if I have to miss the first week, that will be okay,
Lynne: Luna outgrew her crate and sleeps on my kitchen floor at
night. I do plan on taking pottie breaks with the leash on little
walks in fenced in back yard.
Thanks
Betty
Betty, I would strongly consider getting her a properly-sized crate (if money is an issue look on craigslist or freecycle).
I am telling you, dogs often do not realize they've just had major surgery and I can pretty much guarantee she's not going to sit calmly in your kitchen for 10 days straight.
Angela: Good point! I have not replaced her crate because she has
a kennel (which used to be my screened in back porch) but changed
to accomodate a large dog. Kennel is 8x26 inside and 8x10 outside
which I can close off to keep her on the inside or out. I was
hoping by the 17th of August she would be alright by herself in
the kennel. Am I wrong in the assumption?
Thanks
Betty
