If a person were to pay $600, what could they reasonably expect the dog to learn for that $600 as far as starting bite work? I do realize that it depends on the dog and other factors...Im just asking for ballpark. Should the dog have been worked in defense yet? Should the dog have bitten more than one decoy? Should they be on a beginner sleeve? Should the dog have a "watch" command yet?
What breed is the dog? I would say that to start, allot of this will depend on the dog & what genetic qualities he has. Have you set ANY bite foundation work on this dog? Any bite tug, bite piiow work? That would be used before any sleeve work is done, at least with young dogs. Any early work on a dog should all be in prey drive. The mental maturity of the dog should dictate when the dog will be ready for any defense work, not necesatily the age of the dog. There are too many variables to discuss this over the net. You should find a VERY reputable trainer to work with you & your dog. One that is highly regarded by others doing the kind of training with their dogs that you want to do with yours. As far as cost for training that will most likely depdend on the amount of time needed to acheive the goal that you set, providing the dog CAN do this type of work, & with whom you train. Again too hard to just put a $$$ amount on training, as there are too many variables involved. For example a dog that is worked multiple times a week will progress much faster then one worked 1x a week, etc.etc. And training time is money. Finding a good trainer is the most important part of answering your questions. Especially when it comes to bite training. I will add that all my dogs have been started with bite foundation work from 8 week old pups. There are some people here that may have stated older dogs & they will have more to add, I'm sure. Although, I personally, would start even an older dog with the same foundation work as a pup. Some of the work may progress more quickly with an older dog, due to the fact that you don't loose some time during teething etc. Good luck with your dog & training.
I appreciate the answer. I had paid a deposit to someone for training and they apprently have skipped out on me so I was wondering if I at least got that much from them but I supposed it really doesn't matter at this point. I'll just move on.
Thanks again
That is why I mentioned VERY reputable. They need to give you some references that YOU CAN VERIFY. And they need to be people that they have helped train in the venue you want to train in. There are many, many people out there ready to take your money & run with it. I am sorry that this happened to you. Next time do the research until you are satisfied that you will get what you pay for. Maybe if you post where you are located, there might be someone here that can make a recomendaation. Good luck.
