Hi, I have a 16 month old Shepherd. We started him in protection when he was about 5 months old, then took a break because he began to show some signs of shyness around certain people. I socialized him well and he does wonderful with other animals and most people. However, we are just recently starting him back in protection and he is not into it. Im not sure if it is because he does not like the trainer or if its something else. He will not warm up to the trainer so I think that could be why he will not go after the puppy sleeve. Im confused and it is frustrating!! If you have any advice or tips I would love the advice. Thank you.

Alyssa,
Can you give some more information on what type of training was done when he was 5 months old? I don't have experience in protection training, but I think the folks who do will need a bit more info as to what he was exposed to at that time so they can give you solid input.

Yes, It was just beginning puppy training, playing with the tugs and rags. He was doing good then but now he has changed and I think it is because he does not like the trainer at all.. but it is so frustrating.

Do you know if your pup is from a working line or show line?

Alyssa, please DO NOT take this the wrong way... I have a wonderful GSD whom I love, which I thought was a working line dog but which I then learned was a show line dog from Germany with tons of Schutzhund 2's and 3's in his pedigree. (I wasn't mislead, I just didn't understand the information I read...)
Forgive me if you know more than I did 16 months ago, I'm not asking to put you on the spot but only to clarify...

I'm not understanding what you mean by clarifying? We started him in the protection training when he was 4-5 months old. Just playing with the rags and puppy sleeves. He was doing well showing a lot of interest. Then at about 8 months he kinda shut down in a way he did not want to train he showed shyness towards certain people so his trainer said we should back off of the protection training because we didn't want him to be too defensive at first. So we have him fully trained in obedience and now we are STarinv him back in protection but he just dosent seem into it. I just don't know what I should do to get him motivated?

Alyssa,
Why don't you have your trainer evaluate him again? There's no substitute for an experienced eye and no one here can see what you and your dog are actually doing.
There are drive building exercises and things you can do, but bottom line, if your dog doesn't have what it takes to do the protection phase, it won't have it. (I'm refering to strong enough drives for the work, solid enough nerves, things like that.)
And, if it should turn out that your dog isn't made to do SchH, perhaps you could look into other activities/sports that he would enjoy? Competitive obedience, rally, flyball, agility, etc.
After rereading your initial post...if you have questions about your current trainer, then perhaps you could find someone else to evaluate him and what's going on?
Good luck.

Yes, I was thinking about taking him to the kennel I got him from the breeder is also a trainer and just see what he has to say. He does agility well and seems to love it. Like I was saying he did enjoy the training once before but now its like a phase i think but I'm still not sure? Thank you for the advice.

A while ago I was playing tug with one of my dogs (working line mutts, all 3). It was a poorly chosen toy, I didn't know what I was doing etc - she had a painful experience. She wouldn't as much as look at a tug for several months. Watched the DVD, got a more suitable toy, put some time into it and she is tugging again, better than before. I think we might graduate into puppy bite pillows in several years hidden puppy bite pillows.
What I mean to say is ... uh... nothing.
