This is an update of sorts.. I would reply to everyone but I have no idea what I am doing with the whole quote thing. We have decided to keep Taz. We have met with the trainer twice now and things are going pretty well. He uses the NILIF method and has introduced us to clicker training. He gave Taz a temperement test and he scored very well. Taz is now permenantly attached to my hip once again but is taking it well and we have begun to establish our pack structure.
As far as some of the questions, no I have not seen any other types of food or toy aggression. I really do not believe they had anything to do with his toys. While working with the trainer, my kids were there during the second half of the session. My daughter, while trying to get Taz to drop his ball was pulling upward on his forehead. It basically pulled his skin away from his eyeballs. I am completely sure that this is what happened before, but I corrected her. She does not pronounce "drop" very well so I think she was trying to force him to give it.
We also have been very diligent in how he interacts with people coming in the door as he has a bad habit of trying to jump on them, lick and nip thier pant legs.. I believe this is for attention but have learned it is another dominant trait. I have a long ways to go but am making the effort. I have been so busy reading that I forgot to see if there were any new responses.
As far as the breed issue, I have read the articles on chows and chow mixes. I have even discussed this with my trainer. He believes that Taz doesn't show the independent, more stubborn traits. Taz is eager to please, has a strong food drive, great retrieval skills, and just seems to be a great all around dog. We have even been working on his issues with loud noises. The trainer believes, based on his responses, that they are normal. I only have three more sessions with the trainer and cannot afford anymore at this time. However, I will be getting the videos and as soon as they arrive will continue with what I learn from them and this site.
