Hello. First post here. There is some intelligent discussion around here I see, so I'd like to hear some advice. My dog is a pitbull, lab, german shepherd, husky, and dingo mix. He is just over two. Recently I've been helping my girlfriend train her dog, and usually I make my dog wait until I finish training the other dog. My dog remains tiep up on a short leash and whines, barks (high pitch sometimes) and screams. He would do this as a pup if I left him tied, but this seems a lot more intense. I would say he has high to very high drive. I am worried that if I correct him for this it may decrease his drive. But I also wish he'd wait patiently. What do you think would be the best response?
And the training ranges from basic tug of war with obedience thrown in to beginner retriever field training.
Just a note, why don't you just put the dog away like in a crate, truck, room, etc.? My dogs will whine if they see each other training but when I put one in a crate and pull the other out to train, it is relatively quiet. The only time I have really ever seen one dog tied up while the other trained was when they were trying to train the dog to bark. It worked and it got the dog who was tied up so worked up he snapped two different tie downs. It just seems like a simple fix to me but maybe I am missing something.
Good points, thanks. Normally when I take the dogs out I just walk em, and train them in a park. But I should take the time to do it another way, since it's essentially teasing my dog and I don't want him to get hurt pulling on the leash, or whatever psychological damage could occur from screaming. Prevention makes sense, I just thought perhaps I could teach him patience. I have lots to learn I guess.
