Was wondering if I should get pet insurance? We are getting a 8 week old GSD this week. I know that in the past medical bills can be outstanding. I guess just for the peace of mind if something ever did happen it would be worth it. What are your thoughts on this and can someone maybe recommend a good company for this?
I would consider it worthwhile. Read very carefully what your policy covers. When I microchipped one of my dogs it came with 1 month free insurance. But the deductible was like 50.00 and the maximum claim for most injuries was like 100.00 - not really worth it IMO (at least not that policy). So make sure you are getting one that will cover what you think you might need.
a lot of people have also suggested just putting aside the same amount of money every month that you would pay for the premium into a savings account, then the money will be there in an emergency.
Mine costs about $30/mo for two cats, one of whom is prone to eating inanimate objects (the other is a senior), and they've already more than covered all the premiums I've ever paid them. PetCare has served me well, but it's obviously only possible because some people don't have to use it. However, my next dog will definitely be insured with PetCare, and I have no complaints about them. They have also been incredibly easy to work with. $30/mo is only $360, and that doesn't go far at the vet's office. If I had lots of animals, it might not be worth it, but for now, I will happily sing their praises.
