I think I just need a little reassurance that this arrangement will be OK.
Next week hubby and I are going out of town (together!). Instead of boarding our 2 dogs (expensive and I don't want to get all their shots up-to-date since I only do the rabies vaccination), we are planning to pay our neighbor to come in and feed them and let them out of their crates into our backyard for exercise while she is there. Our plan is to have her come down at 6AM, noon, and 6PM. She has done this before for us but only during the noon hour while I was at work and hubby was out of town.
My question is, will the dogs be OK crated from 7PM until 6AM the next morning (she will spend about an hour with them each time she is at the house). Their normal routine is to be "put to bed" around 8PM and I get them up around 4:30AM when I get up.
Kristel - not for a whole week - just 3 days. We will be leaving mid morning on Tuesday and returning late afternoon on Thursday. Also they would be outside in the backyard with our neighbor for about an hour during the 3 times per day that she is over (she loves our patio and will just hang out there with the dogs while they play or just enjoy being outside.
Okay, phew! I guess how long they can hold it depends on the dog.
I used to work in a big kennel where the dogs only had two turnouts a day. Their last turnout was around 5:00-6:00 PM, and most of the runs were clean when we'd arrive the next morning at 7:00-8:00 AM.
If I had to guess I'd say they should be fine, especially since there is really only one full day of you not being there.
I had always suspected that when they are boarded at the vets that they only get two times outside their kennel - it seems like they would be under far less stress at home in their crates versus being boarded at the vets where there are strange people and other dogs in close proximity.
Their crates are the wire type so there is plenty of air circulation and large enough that they can lay down stretched out if they want to.
I love my dogs but it sure eliminates planning any overnight trips away from home! (This is the first time in 3 years that my hubby and I have gone anywhere together overnight).
