I was at the local auto repair shop having my van state inspected and serviced yesterday and had Erika with me. Its a rural area so there was a field to work Erika in and I had to brush her out, there was a well cap about two foot up which made a perfect grooming stand. Erika is also welcomed in the waiting area as well. Anyway, I was playing with Erika with the ball when a older gentlemen walked out of the office and over to the field and Erika ran over to him with the ball in her mouth with that "Play with me!" and then she dropped the ball and started barking all happy at him. What was odd was that she is trained NOT to play with other people or listen to them. Come to find out this gentlemen was a retired K9 officer from the Richmond PD and wanted to see Erika because he missed his own dogs and Erika reminded him so much of his partners he worked with. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that police K9s can sense handlers no matter how long ago it was
