I've been feeding my dog raw for about 2 years and still am confused about what bones should be considered recreational and which fall into the RMB category. Are there any good books which have detailed bone information?
Because I am not sure what is an acceptable bone, the majority of his bones and meats come from poultry; chicken, turkey and Cornish hens. I'd like to add more variety but am unsure where to begin.
For instance I was able to get a very good deal on lamb shanks. Whatever a shank is? The bone seems pretty hard so I've been carving the meat off and throwing the bone away.
He is a 90lb shepherd with a very strong mouth and seems able to demolish just about anything. Is it safe to give him something and see how he does? For instance here's a lamb shank and if he remains standing and chomps it up no problem then it is a RMB but if he lays down and starts gnawing to remove the meat consider it a rec bone. Suggestions?

a shank is a weightbearing leg bone on a lamb usually the foreleg but on occasion the rear joint as well. Lamb to me is one of those grey area meats because there is a huge difference in size and density from lamb to mutton and also by breed.
Thanks Melissa. I believe I have the foreleg shanks. So maybe I'll give him one and see how it goes. He has a really good leave it so if he seems to be struggling I can take the bone away. He has had goat legs in the past and ate those bones no problem but they were not hard like these shanks which must be from a 200 year old mutton .
