I just ordered some Probios, and just looked at the ingredients.
The first ingredient is sucrose? Anyone know why sugar is the first ingredient?
Then something called Sodium Silico Aluminate. I have no idea what that is. I will have to Google that one.
Lastly, there is an ingredient Sodium Thiosulphate.????
I guess I am a bit surprised at the added ingredients. I just thought it would be the list of bacterium ferments and that would be that.
I am just one of those label readers and like to know what the ingredients are and why they are there.
I would appreciate it if anyone has any input/answers.
Thanks in advance.
I just looked up the sodium silico aluminate and it sounds like it is an anti-caking agent, so I understand that one.
But the more confusing one for me is the Sodium Thiosulphate, and also it seems to me that sucrose being the first ingredient seems unnecessary to me.

Sucrose and whey would be the food (and the medium) for the direct-fed microbials (DFMs): Lactobacillus plantarum, Enterococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Sucrose and whey would be considered kind of "jump-starters" to get the DFMs eating heartily and reproducing in a hurry.
Sodium thiosulphate isn't really related to sodium silico aluminate, I don't think, except for them both being salts. It's a reducer of free radicals. It may also shift the product acidity slightly towards alkaline, but I don't know if that's the purpose. It's in quite a few supplements.
JMO, and relying heavily on my somewhat "mature" memory of books and research on probiotics.
I now understand it, and thought I would post the reply from I received from the manufacturer's of Probios, just FYI:
Quote:
Sugar – This is added to the product as this is actually the food source for the bacteria.
Silico Aluminate – This ingredient is what is called a moisture scavenger. This is used to make sure that the bacteria stay dry and stays dormant when it is in the container. Moisture is what “activates” the bacteria and we want the bacteria to become active only once you give the product to your pets.
Sodium Thiosulfate – This ingredient is added to the Dispersible Powder to protect the product once it is dissolved into water. Most city water contains chlorine and that will kill the bacteria very quickly. This ingredient neutralizes the chlorine so that the bacteria can survive in the water.
