I am new to the forum but I have been lurking for quite a while. I have a 12 week old GSD pup that is doing well with her crate training except when I go to let her out of the crate she pees a little in the crate. I believe it is due to excitement but, I don't know what to do to prevent it from happing. She sleeps overnight and for up to 4 hours at a time during the day without a mistake.

Thanks,
Welcome!
I have actually seen this even in "new" (recently acquired) adult dogs in my house.
I attribute it to excitement, too, and I ignore it. With the adults, it starts to go away when I ask for quiet before opening the crate. With puppies, I betcha it just goes away with a little more age.
You mean a little, right? With plenty left for actual urinating outdoors?
Yes, just a little, she still goes when I take her outside. I hope so, I have never had it happen with a pup before. I have been trying to get her to settle in the crate before I let her out after she has been outside. Thanks for the response.

My baby Rain also did the let me out of the crate tinkle. I solved it by not looking at her while I opened the crate. Something about towering over the crate, direct eye contact, and excitement just did it. So I simply opened it from the side and the tinkle stopped. ^.^

Happily she also grew out of this problem.
AHA!
I knew the puppy folks would have good hints. That sounds perfect. Like submissive peeing .... ?

it is submissive peeing usually... If you think about it it's usually the same reaction you get with that submissive pee right after you walk in the door. The posture is the same on all sides towering person, direct eye contact, and a puppy excitedly greeting.
If this doesn't stop the drip however I would have her checked for a UT infection.
You could also try desensitizing her to your approach.
Just move around her crate right after you have put her in, and reward for calm and quiet.
Then start by leaving her for five mins after you put her in, then walking towards her crate, no talk or eye contact, again reward for calm and quiet.
and just work up from there....
I do agree with the previous posts that this may just go away with age and time, so just be patient. The no eye contact thing has worked for me on numerous occasions with new foster pups!
