You really don't 'need' your roommate to be on board in order for you to be the pack leader! As long as you are the leader your dog will see you that way and obey you regardless of what other people are allowing. My husband and son don't participate in Kasey's training, and my son lets him get away with all kinds of stuff, but Kasey knows what I expect and always listens to me!

Teach me your ways! I think I have a considerable amount of respect from both dogs, but it's hard when his dog has no boundaries. There are certain things I don't let them get away with but my roommate doesn't like my philosophy on dogs and doesn't like me applying it to his dog. It's hard to have half a pack, I guess. But it's not disastrous. I'm doing the best I can.
Hi Katie
It can be done on your own, no problem, and you've received some great advice on here.
Also, you can be the leader for the dogs, regardless if the other person is involved or not. Consistency is the key. If you remain consistent, firm and fair, you'll do just fine.
My hubby has a different way of looking at dog behaviour than I do, therefore, two very different views on the rolls the dogs play in the house. I am a lot stricter with them than he is, so I just remain consistent with my ideals, and he with his, and for the most part, all works out well.
Good luck, hope it all works out.

Thanks. How about things like jumping on the couch though? I don't allow the dogs to just barge up any time they want, but he doesn't care. So when it's just me there, they aren't on the couch (unless I ok it, and they certainly aren't in my face like they are with him). Just him and they are, and are all over the place, taking up the whole couch. But what about when we're both home? Can we have two sets of rules for two different dogs?
