Hi Guys,
I did a quick search, but didn't come up with the exact answer I was looking for so I thought I'd post.
What is the average amount of time that you all tether a pup to you? Do you go by how the pup is maturing and responding to leadership cues, or do you go by age, and house training ability?
I've been getting conflicting answers to this - some say only a short period, while others are indicating up to a year or more (yikes!).
Thanks in advance!

What Michael is saying is true. Depends a lot on the dog, what kind of indoor behaviors you expect from the dog, and how the things meet each other in reality. You can't really put a good solid timeline on it.
For instance. My three year old lab is still on a tether in the house. I expect that she will likely be tethered indoors until she's old and gray. It's not that she doesn't learn, she's just a very food driven dog and will destroy my house in pursuit of finding the lone fish cracker under a piece of furniture.
My youngest is still on a tether, my three oldest papillons are tether free as I recall two of them at about 8 months old and the other at 6 months. Basically when they learned to stay in the same room as me, not search for things to chew up, and obeyed the basic obedience commands consistently under minor distractions like familiar people in the house or other dogs in the room.
Thanks guys, this is the first time I've followed through with the process (our dogs are all crate trained). We didn't do it with my little girl, and she's awesome. We started with my hubby's OEB and the separation anxiety blossomed. The only reason I'm doing it with this boy is because of the age we brought him home and the fact that he's highly independent and super stubborn. It's worked wonders for house training, I must admit, and he seems to be "getting it". Thanks again.
