I would love to know how to start training using markers. I watched the Roni ? video, read Ed's article, but any hints & tips before I begin in earnest would be so appreciated.
What I did yesterday was replicate what I saw on Roni's Youtube video. Whenever he followed me, I rewarded him. I think Buckley wasn't interested in food yesterday as his tummy was a bit gassy. He seems much better today.
I also wanted to say thanks for confirming I can take him out in my arms so he can see and smell. I'll also work on being more patient. I took him out today and he was freezing (lifting a paw to keep out of the cold.) But I'll keep getting him outside every day.
Thanks again, all - your help has been instrumental!

Loading the mark is the first step. Do this before mealtime, so that the pup is hungry.
Sit down on the floor with the pup near you and a cup of treats handy (good ones!), and say your marker word (most people here use 'yes!') and give the treat to your pup. Wait a few seconds and repeat. (and repeat and repeat)
After multiple repetitions you should notice that your pup looks at you as soon as you say 'yes', because he's anticipating the reward when he hears the marker.
Test this by waiting until your pup isn't looking at you, then say 'yes' and observe his response. If he doesn't look at you for the reward, either he hasn't made the association yet, or you are not using a high enough value treat.
OK, so that's your first step! Once you've accomplished this you're ready to start training...
And I forgot to mention (and this is important)make sure that you pause for a couple of seconds in between saying your marker word, and handing the pup the treat.
