My 4-yr old GSD has been itching since the fall. This happened last year also. He scratches the hair off the back of his ears, above his eyes, etc. The vet said maybe alergies and put him on an antihystimine but that did not help much. The vet said maybe mange but that is unlikely because our other dog has no symptoms at all and they share the house, beds, etc. He eatrs a diet of Honest Kitchen and raw ground beef, a few eggs a week, fish oil, vitamin E. Also, just to mention, he has pancreatic enzyme deficiency and is on Vio-kase. Any ideas??

I would want a skin scraping done asap. I'm amazed that it was not done, in fact, if the face is the major itch area. Simple procedure that lifts skin cells and the cells (and any parasites) are examined under a microscope.
I would urge that you not let this go. While it's true that an EPI dog may have itch symptoms, the fact that the face is so involved suggests other than simple EPI-related deficiency of skin oil to me, and I'd start with that scraping if the face (head) is the major spot.
Is the face the only area bothering him? No paw or leg or backbone itching? I ask this because the geography of the itching helps to suggest the trigger.
thanks very much. He does scratch other places as well -- his haunches, side, etc. The scratching has improved lately actually -- I mean, he's not scratching every five minutes -- but I will catch him scratching maybe three or four times a day. we're together a lot, so he's not scratching signifcantly when I'm not around. He sleeps right outside our bedroom and I don't hear hims cxrqatching at night..............I will ask about a skin scraping.......

Well, these other areas change the focus a little. Any base-of-tail or backbone itching, and is there any paw-licking or -biting?
What does the itchy skin look like? Any odor?
Does he ever rub his face on carpets or furniture?
hi -- thanks -- no, no paw licking or biting, no odor, he smells good. never rubs his face on anything. Just hiar loss on the back of his ears and over his eyes from scratching..........

This would absolutely make me ask the vet about a scraping.
(It's not like it sounds -- not painful or anything.)
