A friend of mine is researching alternatives to TPLO surgery for her Lab/Chessie mix who tore a ligament. She found this site which makes orthopedic braces and prosthetics for dogs, but it seems to be a fairly new venture and she doesn't know anyone who has used them.
Has anyone had experience, or know anyone who has experience with using a brace as an alternative to surgery? For a number of reasons, (most notably that they live on the second floor and the dog will have to climb a long set of stairs to get outside, and he's 100 pounds so there is no carrying him) she is very hesitant about getting the surgery. These braces look like they could be a good alternative.
Any advice/insight would be much appreciated! Thanks!
I just got my February issues of The Whole Dog Journal where non-surgical alternatives to ligament repair surgeries is discussed in depth. The Orthopets website was included in the material.
Thank you Jessica! She is in Massachusetts, the Boston area. We use the same vet, and while they are not a "holistic" vet, they are very good about discussing alternatives and never push you into anything you're not comfortable with. We are also near Tufts but I don't know if they offer anything like this. She did get a quote from them on surgery and it was higher than the vet.
That's the whole list. I thought I saw a few in the northeast. Hope you can find something. Sorry I couldn't set up links to them all. I need to get off my butt and get ready for work!
