I live in an equestrian area, and on my walks and hikes I pass horses on a daily basis. My pup used to be very barky at the horses, but he has begun to settle down. There are many hiking trails in the area that I would eventually like to go off-leash with my dog (he is only 5 months - so not for a while and until he is fully trained), but we will run into horses on these trails.
How can I get him accustomed to horses? He has begun to relax around them, but if he were off leash I am sure he would run after them and probably end up getting kicked.
I see that Ed has a Video on the subject coming out, but it looks to be aimed at people who own horses. I don't own them, and I don't know anyone with horses well enough to ask them to let me acclimate my dog to their horses.
Keep the dog on leash until it has a solid recall when not around horses. Then buy an e-collar and condition him to it. After that, you can allow your guy off leash on hikes. However, I would always leash your dog when passing horses unless you have complete confidence in him. If he runs up to the wrong horse he will be killed. Not to mention it's a courtesy to the rider, who doesn't want to have to deal with your dog. BTW, horses always have the right of way on a trail, and don't allow your dog to bark at them. I'd work on him sitting calmly on the side of the trail as they pass before worrying about letting him off lead.

Thanks for the advice. I don't plan on letting him off leash until he is older (1 - 2 yrs) and I am sure he is 100% trained and won't bother the horses.
