I took my large black dog Chief to a new vet today. He has gone from 125 to 98lbs since I started raw in July. He said CHief looks great AND lean!! ACL is bad and calcified , but he received his first chiro adjustment from the same vet. Surgery is out, but the he thinks we can manage with physical therapy and glucosime. I have to get him to walk though a ladder laying on the ground about 2 x a day until his next appt (along with his regular walks). Also the vet told me I needed to add a bit of fresh veggies to the dogs' diet since I'm not feeding the whole prey. (I just can't toss them the whole bunnies.) They do eat whole caught fish but not everyday. Thank you Connie for telling me my dog had a pickle shape. That got me to switch to raw and now he is LEAN

AWESOME feeding advice from your vet!
IMO, prey model isn't prey model unless it includes what would be in
the gut; we've talked many times here about the fact that a huge
part of a canid diet would usually include rodents and other small
prey that is devoured whole (so green tripe or as close as we can get
is a small but important part of the diet).
But your thread is not about feeding produce. You did a good job,
and your vet gave you great info. And don't forget daily fish oil (for
all of them, but particularly this guy) plus vitamin E.
Eliminating the dreaded pickle shape is HUGELY beneficial to any dog,
but to a dog with skeletal/joint stuff going on, it might be the number
one thing you can do.
Thanks. I give them fish oil caps daily and have added yogurt weekly sometimes bi weekly. I haven't found green tripe locally yet so I've just added a tiny bit of spinach. (I've learned to ease into things as to avoid the dreaded cannon butt)
