Sharon Empson Webboard User Reg: 08-27-2007 Posts: 1197 Loc: Offline	My dog Cody is recovering nicely, but at this time is unable to continue his raw diet due to the effects of his illness and the stripping of the lining in his colon when he hemmoraged for about 3 days. Soon he will be off his meds and I would like to supplement his cooked chicken breast with a good, natural, supplement until he can get back to eating his regulary diet. I think he is depleated in the mineral department because when I take him outside he tries to lick and eat dirt. This little guy is going to kill me. They believe whatever he ate before is what nearly killed him! Does anyone know of a good overall supplement I could give him? He now weighs about 17 lbs, was about 20, and is allergic to wheat. ALso, has anyone used Show Coat? and what do you think of it? Thanks sharon Sharon Empson

I would prefer (by a lot) to make a home-cooked diet that is varied and balanced (which would of course have calcium supplemented). Did you look at Lew Olson's liver-support diet? Fish oil and E are part of the diet. "Believe" is a big problem for me. As the other thread points out, salmonella is readily testable. "He might have had salmonella" is not an appropriate vet comment. JMO. But right now, yes, no pathogen load is a wise choice, regardless of what made him so sick. Poor lil guy. I am SO glad that he is recovering.

I would use fish oil and E with any of these choices. He needs the anti-inflammation benefits. JMO.

I plan to implement it, and I already save egg shells and grind them for the dogs. I just wondered if there was an overall good supplement for the minerals he may need. THanks. Sharon Empson

Minerals are not something to "multi" with. They are needed in very minute amounts (except calcium) that are best provided in foods, now that you can expand the diet. JMO. Don't forget that the ingredients of the diet contain minerals. THK, of course, is completely balanced, if you go that way.

I disagree about the fish oil, but I'm not a health professional.* You need a health professional's advice. I'd probably try hard to see if I could consult with his old vet just about the diet, even if just about that one item. * Lew Olson is one, however. Maybe an email ..... I don't know how many she can respond to, but I would consider it worth a shot.
