Murphy's law of raw feeding.
So I was at the grocery store today and did a huge doubletake. There was a giant section of chicken and turkey backs for 10 cents a pound. I think I did an aisle jig.
So I cleaned them out. Apparently they let the new kid do the ordering this week and he wrote down the wrong sku ... So anyways, I get home and realize my freezers are pretty darn full. So I probably have 15 - 20 lbs of backs left in my fridge until I figure out the freezer.
So I guess my question is at what point is the stuff in the fridge going to be too funky for the dogs? I'm going to try to borrow some freezer space from my sister but in the odd chance I have some stuff in the fridge a week is that going to be alright? I've really never had this come up before because I usually thaw in the fridge day of or day before.
One week in the fridge is something i do often and never had issues.
I've definitely left meat in the fridge a week also - never had a problem.
Oscar has never hesitated one second before eating things that smelled a little "off" either - I certainly try very hard to not feed anything that isn't fresh, but occasionally it happens, and I've never seen ill effects.

Not sure what Connie's original comment was, but when fish oil actually goes BAD, it becomes a carcinogen. Truly rancid meat (not just "off") might make a dog temporarily sick, but I don't believe it's quite as dangerous as feeding rancid fish oil... perhaps Connie can clarify.

I feed them things that smell a little off with no problems, certainly if it is rotten or really nasty I toss it out.
Sometimes I thaw meat for us and don't get a chance to cook it in the time frame when I am comfortable eating it, in that case it nearly always goes to the dogs, which makes it about a week old.

Just an aisle jig??? I would have had to attempt cartwheels (NOT a pretty sight...) and generally act like the village idiot! Nice score. I'd tip the new kid and give him an "incentive" to repeat his mistake!

sorry that was a tad confusing, I think it went along the lines of when the food smells like vegetable oil that is getting rancid, you should not feed it.
