I'd thought I'd give ya'll update if anyone is interested.
Overall, we're doing really well with the raw diet. Both my dogs have taken to it pretty well and I've gotten pretty good at determining portions, poop and what foods are best for which dog.
Our beagle seems to be able to eat anything I give him without any issues. Our lab is still having some trouble with red meat, but I've pretty much decided that I'm not going to worry about it too much. If the majority of his diet is poultry and fish, then so be it - hopefully it'll keep him lean as he approaches old age. He seems to be able to handle a little bit of ground red meat, as well as organ meat, but any substantial piece of muscle meat makes him vomit. For example, if I give him 3 oz of ground beef or 2 oz of beef liver or even 1 or 2 oz of table scrap beef he's fine. But I gave him 3 oz of some raw muscle meat off of a soup bone and I thought he was about to go into shock from vomiting so hard. He literally froze up and I had to snap him out of it. It was scary. I don't think he's allergic, because he seems to be able to handle organ and ground beef. So I don't know what it could be. But after that incident, I just decided that it probably isn't worth it. So a poultry and fish diet, with a little red meat supplemented in occasionally, will do it for him.
Anyway, besides that both dogs are doing great. Although it was probably unnecessary, I got my vet to take blood tests, just to be sure, and they were perfect. No deficiencies or anything. So I'm feeling pretty confident about it now.
Good to hear that all is going well with the raw feeding!
It sounds like you have figured out what works for your dogs.
It is a very gratifying feeling when it all comes together.
Have you tried feeding any duck? Considering they seem to well with poultry, maybe some duck thrown in there from time to time would work too.
Nice to hear that your blood profiles are perfect as well, it gives a peace of mind.
Thanks for the update, I am glad it is going well.
Thanks! Yeah, I'm mixing in duck, turkey and rabbit. I even have some pheasant, but haven't served it yet. I'm still working on getting some more critters in bulk. I've joined some local Yahoo user groups that have connected me with other raw feeders and producers.
Ok, now I am gettin jealous!!
Did you get all these sourced from one raw supplier?
If you don't mind John, could you let me know how I might get in touch with the same kind of thing here in Texas?
Right now my bulk supplier only carries turkey, beef, chicken and tripe, oh venison too.
I guess I better get Googling!!
No, I actually haven't used a raw feeding supplier yet. The duck and pheasant I got from hunters... mainly family members. Venison too. Now that hunting season is pretty much over, I don't expect too much more of those meats. I haven't gotten a ton of turkey, but there is actually a big organic turkey farm here in Alabama that I stop in at from time to time. The rabbit I found from a farmer who happens to be near my parents. She sells them super cheap and dresses them... or you can even do it yourself. I found her through the user group.
I was actually surprised by how resourceful the Yahoo groups are. The ones in my area have two bulk suppliers that do a lot of discount and promotions through the groups. Although, I haven't used them yet. Also, many of the members offer stuff to everyone else. It's basically a Co-Op. If someone finds a deal somewhere, they tell everyone. If someone has extra, they offer it. If someone has a freezer die, they offer the meats so it doesn't go to waste. Some of the members are farmers themselves and just want the business, like my rabbit source. I've also posted wanted adds on Craigslist and met some producers that way too.
I prefer to eat local pastured foods, so I talk to a lot of farmers. Most of the farmers are raw feeders themselves and don't mind giving me something extra for the dogs in exchange for repeat business.
If you haven't checked out the Yahoo groups, I would look into them. There are tons of local groups, but some national groups as well.
Thanks John,
I will have to check these out. I just would like to get some more variety in their diet.
BTW, you are a very lucky guy to have some family hunters!
But I will for sure have to start trying to call around to different farmers and see what I can find.
Most seem to have the basic four, beef, chicken and turkey and venison too.
But the only rabbit source I know are really expensive.
I'll keep searching! Thanks!
