Putting weights in the bottom of the can is a good idea, I never would have thought of that.
I do like the simple human trash cans, we have a very small one in the bathroom and it works great to keep him from scavenging that trash. But even it was expensive!!
I have seen some off brands that seem just as nice though too, the hardware store down the street has the nice three compartment one for $99. I was thinking two for dog food and the third for cat food.
If you got cats you would have those cat litter containers. They are somewhat sturdy and airtight. I keep organic fertilizers in them and so far my dogs haven't opened them. Again, it depends on how determined they are. At least these are free.
Erica, it looks like it has a pedal or foot lever? Our BeagleXBoxer learned to open them....so did my sister's Portuguese Water Dogs if I remember her right. 'Course Rabbit (the beagle X Boxer....we figured it was as close as he'd ever get to one) also opened the frig and we had to get one with only a finger grip, no handle at all. Highly food motivated dog!
As for trash, we keep it in a cabinet with a strong magnet latch. All smaller household trashes are up off the floor in some way....remnants of Rabbit living here.
Dog food is in a 50 gallon garbage can in the garage where only the cats go...or I am sure it would be an issue.
There is a pedal, but it takes a surprising amount of weight in the right spot to get it to open. It's not the type of pedal that if you barely tap it, the lid springs up. My current dogs aren't very motivated to figure out the trash can, they are more of opportunists, if it's easily accessible they will get into it, if not, they leave it alone. A motivated dog could probably figure it out but it would take some practice and it would have to be a heavier dog to be able to get it to open.
