Just asking, my pup will be here in about three weeks from the breeder, my questions are: Who is responsible for the tattoo on the pup? or At what age is recommended to do the tattoo. My last Pup came with his, but his ears was erect and he was about ten weeks. Thanks

The tattoo can be applied by the breeder, a vet, or you at any time there is enough ear leather to get it in. The pin and clamp style tattoo isn't complicated, just a matter of application. Most people I know who do tattoo do so at 7-8 weeks prior to the pup leaving for a new home.
Microchips are an acceptable alternative to tattoos for SchH identification purposes. In fact, I think that in Germany, they will be suplanting tattoos. The SV will have it's own set of chip codes.
Thanks Melissa and Charlie, I think I read somewhere the dog has to be sedated to tattoo the ears? If that is so, would it be best done at the vet, also during preliminary hips certification, whoa! seems so much. I hope the microchip is the new deal. I will also be looking out for any changes in rules. Plus I better check with the breeder. Thanks once again. Dan

If you are trialing under USA, DVG, SV or AWDF clubs, a chip is sufficient. When you trial, you may want to check to make certain the club has a reader that can read that particular brand of chip. More and more clubs are getting them.
However, if they don't, you will need to make provisions for one.
