My 6 month old pup has never really liked being picked up. However, when I tried to pick him up to weigh him today, he started to flip out and tried to bite me. When I tried to do it again, he snapped before I even got him. We think he is a Shepherd/beagle/corgi mix. He's around 40 pounds now, and I only pick him up when necessary. I put my right arm around his chest, right in front of his front paws and my left hand on his rear. I don't think it hurts him, but he gets nervous. He is a very skittish dog to begin with and we have been working on a lot of his issues. Is there a way to get him being used to getting picked up when necessary?

Take him to the vet for a check up, just in case he is in pain.
Are you familiar with marker training?
I would get him used to having your arms around him, do it slowly rewarding each step of allowing you to hold him. When he is comfortable being held you can start lifting him off of the ground.
Do everything gradually. An inch off of the floor is progress. If he starts to show discomfort go back a stage.
I was thinking along those lines. First putting my arms around him and praising when he is good with that. Then lifting just a bit for a second or two and rewarding, etc... We have an appt. with a trainer who comes highly recommended. They strongly believe in establishing pack structure, but in a gentle way, which is exactly what I'm looking for. It's not for 2 more weeks though. We almost got rid of him initially because he was scared of many things and bit whenever he got excited and often when he was handled. We went to Petsmart for socialization and that did help him with his fear of other dogs. We also met with 2 other trainers, but they didn't teach much more than the basic obedience. We had a Chow who had severe hip dysplasia in her last few years, and we were unable to handle or pick her up due to her temperament, and I refuse to let that happen again...
