I have been working on gettng my 11 month GSD to remain calm in distracting situations. His biggest triggers are aggressive dogs, skateboards, cats, people that stare at him and things that go by him quickly
Yesterday, the city where I work had their annual Good Friday “Walk for Life” and I thought it might be a good opportunity to get Benny used to lots of crowds. We sat down on the grass about three feet from the sidewalk. At least 1000 people went by, carrying signs and balloons. There were kids in strollers, horns honking; People with hats, banners, loud speakers. Several children came up and petted Benny.
He was perfect with everything! He showed no stress, except when a balloon popped near him, and recovered quickly.
Some people took pictures of him. I think it helped that the crowd was moving slowly and he was tired from an earlier 3 mile walk and brief play with two dog friends we met on the way.
After awhile he just laid down and nodded off in the midst of the chaos. On the way home he had his head out the window as we passed a guy in costume standing on stilts with a sign advertising a BBQ Diner. Benny just took it in stride, chalked it up to one more weird human.
At the start of the day he did start to bark at a big statue of St Joseph who seemed to be starring at him but I mived him away and he was fine. I would have preferred to let him approach and see that St Joe meant no harm, but could not without disturbing people.
Good for you, Debbie and Benny!!! Sounds like you both had a very good day, and it wasn't stressful for either of you!!
Sometimes statues are scary. Drift barked her head off at one once at an auction. The auctioneer made a joke out of it and asked if anyone had an opening bid for the barking puppy... They started her at $50
Keep doing what you are doing. You know your dog and what he will be able to take. Just remember to keep it slow and consistent and you should be fine. If you run into problems, you know everyone is here for you.
