On Marker training, I understand we begin with the Yes marker on the behavior you wish to mark. OK, so far so good. When do you introduce the word (Look, Watch me, Sit, Down ETC) As you continue to mark the desire behavior. OK. I am not a cheapskate, I will be getting the DVD in about a week or so. But Chico will be here tomorrow. And yes I do have several DVD to start with 8 weeks to 8 months, Basic dog OB, Raising working puppy, and many more. You all Know how it is getting a brand new dog, My main objective is aye contact. and mutual engagement along with crate training. Help a dog handler out? Happy Easter, Great resurrection Day. Dan

I always shape the behavior with the "yes" marker. When that behavior looks perfect and the dog starts to anticipate what is expected, then I name it.
I try to not jump the gun and mark things with a word until it is looking really good. It is way easier to teach it right from the beginning, than it is to fix it later.
Niomi, So you you are saying do the task with a yes, reward, and a approval by petting making a big deal. and once I am satisfied that the behavior is down pack, then I name the task. Dan

For example, say I was shaping a sit through luring. I would hold the treat to the pups nose and slowly move it up and back until the pup sat. Then I would "yes" and reward. Maybe a little pat, but I try to give my dogs room to think. So I would do that until the pup started to just sit on it's own and look for food. Then I would name it when he did it. After maybe 5 sits at a time, I would release, so get the pup up and moving, reward with food and lots of praise. I keep my big praise for the end of short training sessions. Just my preference I guess!
