Its almost that time of the year when "Chiggers" are a real
issue for me. If one bites me I welt up. The itch can drive
you insane. I spray my shoes and lower Jeans with Deep Woods Off
but sometimes I still get bit. Can you recommend a product for
Itch factor. Ive tried Benadryl, works fair. Ive also tried
Chigger Rid but its sometimes hard to find. All suggestions
will be greatly appreciated. Chiggers drive me NUTS.

I'm right with ya' Betty... I HATE these little varmits and am also very sensitive to thier bites. Washing in baking soda helps somewhat as does an anti-itch cream and believe it not, dabbing the bite with clear nail polish - it simply prevents air getting to the bite area and this helps tone down the irritation.
Some folks can be allergic to the bite and need Rx medication.
I've always wondered why dogs aren't effected by them? (I'm thrilled, but wonder why not...)
Hate 'em, hate em', hate em.

Barbara: I've tired the nail polish but only made it worse for
me. I welt really, really bad, could be I'm slightly allergic
the anti itch creams don't last long enough. I too wonder why
our dogs don't get bothered by them. I have a acre pasture that
I walk Luna in and if I forget to spray they eat me alive. So
I have to remind myself. SPRAY, SPRAY AND SPRAY SOMEMORE!!!

The only thing that I have used was this lotion called "Sarna"
You can buy it at Walgreens or Target. It is a medicated lotion that helps take away the itch.
But if you should get some and apply it to your whole body, be warned, I swear it lowers your core body temperature! LOL!
I has camphor and menthol in it and i was shocked at the cooling ability it had. I once had a bad case of chiggers and this lotion really helped.

Joyce: I will give it a try. Chiggers seem to like to get me
behind the knees, so I think using it knee to ankle would be
okay. Thanks

I have one other suggestion for you Betty, if you want to give it a try for a repellent.
For over one year now, I have been using "Best Yet" cedar spray from http://www.Cedarcide.com for flea, tick and mosquito repellent and it has worked really well. It has a strong cedar smell, and if that smell doesn't bother you, it is really awesome stuff.
It says right on the bottle that it is useful against chiggers too.
If you are really wanting to try something new, I would give it a try. They have a quart bottle for $29.99 and then they always throw in a personal size which I believe is 4 oz. for free!
Anyhow, I just thought it was worth mentioning. I hate bugs, especially when you get bit up so bad. Plus those chigger bites last for weeks! (they did on me anyways)

Joyce; They last for weeks on me too! I do like the smell of
cedar. I'll try anything if it gets rid of chiggers or at least
keeps them from biting me. Thanks again.

I had used the Sarna lotion years ago, when I had the really bad chigger bites. Back then, I didn't know about the cedar oil product.
Since trying this on my dogs and because it was so successful on them, I decided to try it on me for repelling mosquitos and various other biting insects and have really been pleased with the ability to keep the buggers from biting me too.
Let me know how it goes for you, if you give it a try! Best of all, I believe it is considered a very low level insecticide and not considered harmful to humans, animals or children, so that is always a plus.

Joyce: the fact that this is a low level insecticide is a plus
for me. I do not spray Deep Woods off directly on my skin
because I personnaly do not believe excessive use would be a
good idea. And since I walk in a pasture and play ball in
wooded and pasture invironment many times a day I'm affraid
of overuse of Deep Woods Off. So A low level insecticide that
works. Sounds Good!
