A slightly different angle - my youngest dog fought like crazy the first time I trimmed her nails ( I got her as an adult) I just held her and ignored the wiggling, struggling, slightly nippy dog.
The next day I went out again with the clippers to finish what I had left (I quit after she gave up). She just stood there quietly and let me clip. I calmly told her she was good as I worked and played with her afterward.
Same thing with my middle dog and baths (also got him as an adult). The first one he nearly wiggled his way out of the harness I had on to hold him. I just ignored it and continued on. Now he just stand there nice as can be for me.
If they had been truly scared of it I would have approached it differently. But it was more of a " I don't like it so I'm going to get away" with them.
To: Lori, Rob and Barbara. Wish you were here to see the grin on my face. I am so thankful for all the experience feedback, I did not think on none of those technique at the moment. all I new was, he had something in his ear, and even thou I was scared of not knowing, I was going to get it done. And macho man took over. As I now long removed from that moment, and had time to read everyone post, Chico and I been on several outings, believe you me. I have been looking for any backlash from my stupidity. And I must say, He is Man, as in all of us; Best Friend. Dan
A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself. ~Josh Billings
Dan, there is no doubt in my mind your one little moment of "do as I say, not as I do" will have absolutely NO ill effects on the relationship between you and Chico. You have worked too hard to do so many things right that this one episode will only make you a better trainer/leader.
