I have just adopted a Border Collie/Black lab puppy and I am moving into a new house with a park down the street. She is about 6-8 months old and hasn't gone into heat for the first time yet. Her previous owner were a nice couple and the man taught her a few commands that she loosly obeys like sit and down. I am a amature with training but I have a fairly good grasp on the fact that most of the training is on me. She is very smart and has a good play drive. The other dog they had was a 5 year old male beagle that she would dominate. Is it possiable to have this dog do protection work for my fiance when I get deployed for the Army? If so where do I start? I wanted to try to retrain her to obey my commands and work on her disipline to the point to where she could do the mondio ring or at least attack and release on command. Any help would be kindly accepted.
Anythings possible Eric, but I really doubt protection or Mondio would work out. An alert bark could be something though. I would just use her to learn as much as you can as far as training obedience to help prepare you for a different dog in the future.
Congrats on your new puppy! I agree with Steve; an alert bark is what to work on; especially if your deployment is imminent. Even a very skilled trainer can't rush the training and the amount of time necessary to prepare a dog for Mondio or protection.
Are you familiar with "Marker Training"? There is tons of information on the website and also in the forum. Look around I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how easy it will be to retrain her to your commands.
At 6-8 months she is still a baby as well as being new to your home. I'm not sure what you mean by discipline but I'd introduce that later after you have formed a bond with her and have introduced her to the basics in obedience. Keeping her on a leash or line at all times until she is trained will enable you to manage her behavior which should be sufficient while you get to know each other.
