If Anaplasmosis/Lyme bugs are present in large amounts, in joints, systemic, long term and you give a drug which suddenly KILLS all these agents you can have a profound reaction related to the dying bugs. This reaction is immune mediated and the treatment would be short term prednisone, after which the tetracycline class drugs would be started again.
My neighbor ( 84) is now in a nursing home having had exactly the experience that you describe with your dog. Anaplasmosis. He is better after 2 wks, and might come home tomorrow. No quess work, they found anaplasmosis DNA in his blood -- he had developed sudden arthritis/weakness/ dehydration 2 wks after a tick bite. I had the disease 2 years ago. I thought it might be time to order the stone!
Doxycycline is pretty benign for most animals. If it doesn't agree with your dog other antibiotics can be used, including tetracycline itself which is really a mild drug.
My point is your dog may very well have had Anaplasmosis.
Thought I posted, but guess I didn't hit the button....
The liver is the only organ in the body that can completely regenerate itself. If your dog has some "condition" that is treatable with medication or just time and nursing care it will improve. Give love and feed him what he will eat and don't be afraid of short term prednisone. 3 days of Prednisone never hurt anyone. 3 months of Prednisone is a different matter...
Hopeful liver failure story:
My cat(I hate cats) had liver failure ALT>2000, did not eat for a month (I force fed her tiny balls of hamburger, would have PTS but my husband (cancer surgeon)said "liver failure is not such bad suffering"-keep trying) made a complete recovery.
Don't loose heart!
If you had a diagnosis you would have a better idea of the prognosis....
I HATE pred too, but it makes a world of difference with Nico used for the short term when she has her horrible immune system flare ups.
She has been on a low dose now for several months to keep the cancer at a lower level and she is doing ok.
So while I avoid steroids as much as possible, and will never give her another shot of the stuff the pred pills have been very helpful in helping the swelling, joint stiffness and itching she gets in the spring and summer.
Update. He is remarkably better..haven't started pred and may not need to.
I picked up the meds this weekend and at the same time noted a huge improvement in every area. Temperament up, happy, still a bit stiff but hugely better.
Waited till I could speak with the vet today and he asked me how he was doing. After hearing he said "Why don't we wait a bit before starting the Pred." ok by me. Apparently this issue, whatever it is, could spontaneously resolve. He's on milk thistle and amoxicillin for the liver. Blood work this Thursday.
This has been a horrible event! Training and schutzhund are fun but at the end of the day one of the best things about having a dog is coming into the room and seeing them wag their tail and come over for some attention!
This dog was so sick he couldn't move, nevermind wag his tail.
Hoping for the best.

So sorry you've been through such a tough time, Lori - I can completely relate to your above statement, it's the exact same thing I kept thinking as I watched my dog recover from a bad illness last month - the first day he was well enough to perk up and give me a head tilt at my voice I was over the moon... We don't even realize how much we rely on and enjoy their tiniest responses to everything we do, until they're not well... I'm SO glad the worst seems to have passed and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a full recovery.
