I have 2 German Rottweilers. One of my 3 year old females (Eliza Jane) is losing her hair all over. It is really thinning out. She has very dry skin again. I have taken her to the vet for this a year ago. I was told to add a little olive oil to her food. This worked great for a while, But her hair got really oily.
I have even thought she has had separation anxiety when I travel. When I leave to go on trips she has great care here at her home. But she will still loose her hair while I am gone. Her hair will come back just fine after I am home for a while. But now it seems she is back to the really dry skin and loosing her hair even though I have been home since march. I am usually gone for 2 weeks when I have to travel.
She did just have a litter of pups 2 weeks ago. Her hair started thinning while she was pregnant. My other female Jazemin is doing great she has none of these troubles. she is 4 years old.
Please help with any advice you may have. I am clueless at this point.
Thanks in advance
Priscilla
Well just from what you said, hair growth can be affected by a lot of factors which include but aren't limited to diet, stress, weather, seasons, and hormones. In this given situation, it sounds like you have at least three of those factors.
What stuck out the most to me was the olive oil on food actually helping. What type of food are you feeding? Skin issues are always a tough case and so one of the first things I would look into is diet. Have you actually taken her to the veterinarian to see if she has a clean bill of health otherwise(bloodwork, skin scraping, etc.)? Is your dog really itchy as well or is she just losing fur and that's that? Also you should keep in mind that every dog is different and allergies or genetics could have a factor into which only one dog is affected.
I know I didn't really give you any answers, but these questions might help in getting a clearer response into what could possibly be going on.
Thank you for your reply. Both of my dogs have had clean bill of health from their vet. Eliza went in and even had the hip x rays done to make sure that was good. She is a very large female. She spent a full day having test done. I know there was blood work done I had to take in her poop samples also. But I am not sure about the skin scraping. This was about a year ago though.Since they were really not as helpful I was trying to figure out something myself before going in search of a new vet. Yes she is very itchy this time. But When she would loose her hair while I was gone she would just simply lose hair.
I have changed her food quite a few times to try and fix the problem. The vet has always got a brand for me to try. I even bought a personal blend from a breeder of malamutes at one time. What would you recommend as a good diet.
Thanks so much
Well raw food to me would be the best way to go in this situation. It can help cover allergy needs, skin and coat issues, and just overall health of the animal. I can't atthe moment, but there are many informative links to raw diets here on this forum as well as links to recommended reading on the subject as well. If someone can help me out with those links at the moment, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It is normal for a bitch to blow her coat surrounding pregnancy both before and after whelping. It will grow back, it's just hormones going wacky. Keep feeding her like a normal bitch with a litter and unless her skin gets inflamed I wouldn't worry about it too much.
I would discontinue olive oil though, it's not really a good coat supplement for a dog when most dog diets are already omega 6 heavy. I do use a coat supplement with my coated dogs to keep their hair from breaking but even that doesn't stop my girls from blowing their coat on every heat.
During pregnancy and lactation all protein resources are directed to pup growth and milking, nothing extra available for "hair". In addition, it's fall, a time coat not lost in spring is going to fall out.
Adding some quality protein/fat (maybe a few raw meatballs, hamburger, your choice) may help, but I doubt her coat will revive much until her pups are weaned.
