I'm a beginner to schutzhund. Currently I have a 18 month female gsd. And a 2 year old shitzu(female). I was going to get this new pup in 10 weeks but I gave a 50 day turnaround at my work. So I'm waiting for that. My female gsd won't be able to participate in schutzhund due to her hip. But I have been working with her on obedience regularly. She is doing great. She is very protective of the house. But welcomes everyone. Since my new dog will strictly be a working dog I have no idea of raising a working dog as opposed Tina family dog. What videos would you guys recommend? Will I need to build or buy a kennel or will a crate work? It's almost scary. But I do know that an attack on a pup can hurt them for life. I will be getting a male gsd this time. I'm truley fascinated with a lot of you trainers. I just want to make sure I do everything right. I will also have to find a professional for his bite work. I'm from Oklahoma, might be tough here. Any input on the things I need to focus on the most? My turnaround is over in November so I have time to get prepared! Thanks alot. All criticism welcomed!

Hello. I should probably wait until I've had more coffee to post...(i'm not a trainer either) but am trying to understand what you are researching, introducing a new pup into the household and have him train at Schutzhund? Or are you wanting this new pup to be a working, titling dog that is not in the house and involved with your other 2 current dogs? What expectations do you have for the new to be pup? Maybe clarifying the above will help get responses on the housing and raising thoughts from others?
Have you looked for Sch trainers in your area? I would recommend going to the different clubs prior to getting the dog and just watching and talking with the group before selecting a club.

Yes I do want it to interact with my family and other dogs. If that's possible with a schutzhund dog. As of now I don't know of any schutzhund clubs in Oklahoma but I will research that more. I have been
Asking around but no good sources yet. I was wanting an input if videos everyone would recommend for a first time newbie as I am. I purchased : schutzhund: theory and training methods by Susan barwig. Don't know if this is a good approach or not. Has been very helpful for the obedience aspect.
Its not the sport that decides whether the dog is a family dog or not, thats the dogs temperament. Same as if you were looking for any pet. The biggest part of Schutzhund is obedience, thats always good for any dog.
I would recommend you go with the Michael Ellis dvds for obedience, I don't remember if there's a sport tracking dvd from Leerburg, but the book by Gary Patterson here is good. The protection phase, I would leave up to the club and helper to teach you.
