Hi,
I have been helping my mom with her dogs for years and have been thinking of getting a dog for myself. I will be teaching it to herd livestock. But I don't know if I should get a male or female. I have read some other discussions similar to this but I still wasn't sure about it. I was wondering if anyone has ever noticed a difference in training or working ability. Thank you for any advice you can give me (this is my first post on a discussion forum) and your patience.

The sex of the dog often comes down to personal choice, especially if you're not considering breeding or protection-type work.
There are some general differences between the sexes, but I don't know that they'd be particularly notable in a herding dog.
Bitches are known for holding grudges, so I suppose its possible a female might be more likely to remember one specific animal that kicked her, and push that one around more aggressively than needed...
Really, in your position, I wouldn't go into it looking for a specific sex puppy, but rather, looking for the best pup in the litter, sex immaterial.
Hi, Bratling!
Isn't that a nicer version of what I always told you?
There's a reason we call the girls what we do. lol
Ok, if you are serious about this puppy (and you have earned one by now - good girl!) you do realize that you will be helping me put up another run out back, right?
Oh yeah - gender is immaterial - so is color. (I know you like the chocolate ones, but the black ones are really nice, too.
Oh, and I love seeing you here, just another way for me to keep an eye on you. lol
Good choice in forums!
We recently asked this exact question of a top GSD breeder and she basically said that the temperament of the individual dog and it's breed line outweighed the gender considerations.
She recommended a female to a first time owner who worked at home. We took her advice and five weeks later feel she got it right.
I recently rescued a male of 18 months but took him on the advice of the rescue team based on my individual situation.
