I took Ryuk out to my housemates garden plot a few minutes ago (she has him mark the area around it since it seems to be the only thing that keeps rabbits away)....
I turned my back for a second and turned back to find Ryuk carefully picking cherry tomatos off one of the plants and eating them....
I've heard tomatos are poisonous but I also know my parent's dog has eaten a fair share in her lifetime (the only thing she'll counter surf for) and has been fine. However I'd assume it's like grapes, you never know how much each individual grape has of the poisonous chemical....
These were ripe and he didn't have any interest in the actual plant. I can't imagine he got more than 3 or 4 since we pick them daily and thier just aren't that many there and they're hard to locate....I figured I'd watch him....anything I should be looking out for?
thanks and aren't dogs supposed to eat meat? I mean come on...trying to grab a bite of roadkill I get....but tomatos? O_o
i had a rescue tosa b4 and the person who had him feed him raw meat and cans of ground tomatos all the time so i just keept his feeding the same and he was fine now i have a cane corso but i dont realy feed him any veg at all
WOW, raw meat and canned ground tomatoes is not a good choice!
Jamie, I think he will probably be fine. Fron what I understand the harmful compounds are found mainly in the leaves and stems, and what there is in the fruit itself lessens as the tomato ripens.
that makes me feel a little bit better XD the worst part is I had him downstay in the spot near the tomatos since I didn't want him to get into things XD I turn around and it's one of "ON COME ON...REALLY?!" moments lol.....

What they're talking about is usually Tomatine (seriously) which is a toxin in the plant. Tomatoes are part of the nightshade family and this toxin is in the green parts of the plant and lessen as the fruit ripens. That's why some dog foods claim it's ok to have tomatoes in it. So odds are there won't be an issue from eating a few of the riper fruits. If he ate a whole plant I'd be a little more worried.
Our westie used to pick tomatoes and eat them. I never saw an adverse affect.
I would think the solanaceous glycoalkaloids would be in the plant much more than the fruit. Like potatoes or eggplant.. usually starts with upset stomach. Green tomatoes, green potatoes....bad.
What I find amazing is how many sites have the EXACT same info on this and have likely plagerized someones information. Then there is info saying it is bad...but their reasoning is way off in left field..like one saying that they were high in oxalates.
Personally I would limit access to them.

It is a pet peeve of mine when well intentioned internet animal folks pick up bits on information and start repeating it, sometimes getting downright assertive that the listener had best sit up and take their offered info hook line and sinker or they will be judged unfit.
Rant over.

When Daisy was at my parents house (and trying to lose her extra 40-something pounds) she used to jump the fence into their garden and eat the tomatoes. Those were pretty big tomatoes too and I'm not even sure how ripe they were. It ticked my mom off to no end, but Daisy never seemed worse for it. She must have thought they were starving her or something, because she'd eat anything remotely edible, including unripe windfall apples and pears too. She wont even touch fruit any more.
If its just the ripe fruit itself, it's probably fine. I've heard that even ripe tomatoes can be very bad for cats though. Don't remember why or where, though.
