Hi all, I really hope that someone can help me with this. I have a 8m GDane at 115pnds. He rules the house. I have never trained him and I am trying to work with him now. I am going through the behavioral tapes and working with a prong collar. He is AWESOME on collar. He behaves perfectly only after a few earlier corrections. My wife has another small dog at the home. My problem is 1) when the collar is off, he become a real ba%^@#d, 2) He is marking all over the place. He urinates inside in areas, as well as outside on the patio, 3) When he is outside, if he wants to come in, he jumps up on the door and barks. I am afraid that he is going to bust the door soon and get hurt.
I am really attached to this dog, but I am losing patience. Please help. I do not want to give him up, but this can't go on....
Hi Laureen,
I got him as a pup at 8 weeks. I plan on him being a member of my family as an indoor dog. I have not yet had him neutered, but he will be soon (if this will help him).
If you were calm for 8 months it's a pity to give up after a few tries. Great Danes are nice dogs and generally not so difficult to deal with. I think yours is too spoiled if he rules the house.
Starting a serious OB work program would probably solve your problems no. 1 and 3 in a short time. He also needs outdoors exercise, as he is a huge young dog. When he gets really tired, I doubt he would save enough energy to bark and jump to break your door.
Go to Ed's articles on how to deal with the dominant dog, they are a great help, even if yours may not be dominant. See also housebreaking articles here in this forum.
Also, long walks, many environment changes (new places, climbing stairs, crowded areas, hiking, walking in the heavy rain, swimming, waiting exercises near the shop, going by car or by bus) made wonders in time with my dogs.
Sorry, I completely forgot about the neutering stuff.
It does not solely solve the problems. Behavior changes slowly in time by neutering the dog (BTW I prefer to do it later, maybe 1-2 years old), you can't expect a brand new calm dog the next morning or the next month; and certainly this won't teach the dog what you expect from him, he still needs training.
I think obedience work proved to be the most effective of all methods.
Good luck and a lot of patience.
Thanks Michaela!
I have been training him with the Leerburg tapes and he has making make great gains. I noticed a change in his attitude right away. I realized that I was not being very fair to him, as I did not praise him often, so he never got any positive reinforcement. His attitude changed when I started showing him more positive feedback. I appreciate your suggestions, I guess I shouldn't be upset with him, I caused this by spoiling him rotten. I guess they react kinda like children. I am waiting to have him neutered till he is older, but for now I purchased an e-collar. I will try this to keep him off the door. Thanks again- I will do better for his sake.
The neutering can be done now, he is not too young and it will not affect his growth adversely.
Danes are pretty laid back and nice dogs, but I have seen a couple of extremely dominant aggressive males - both were harlis! They are too big a dog to let get the upper hand, and you need to get control now while he is young. Crate training also will help with the inappropriate potty action in the house!
