I have a 5 month old boxer male. Currently I am working on building his prey drive with help from the flinks video (training drive, focus & grip). One of the few problems I'm having is that he barks/growls whenever affection is stops.
i.e. I'm watching TV and if i give him a pat on the chest, he will bark and growl when i stop. Sometimes he nips at my feet. Should i just ignore this behavior or is it time for a prong collar? My only hesitation is that the prong will hurt his drive. A choke collar is what the pet store told me to try but i've only read bad things regarding chokes. thanks in advance
i.e. I'm watching TV and if i give him a pat on the chest, he will bark and growl when i stop. Sometimes he nips at my feet. Should i just ignore this behavior I think yes. Why prong the puppy for begging attention. I'd pet him only for doing something I say (come, sit, down, whatever). And I'd pretend to be distant, I'd completely ignore him, except when I decide it's time for playing, working or petting.
Building focus and drive is one thing, and leaving peacefully with my dog in my house on my terms is another thing.
Joshep I'd just distract him with a fetch of a old sock or one of his toys, when and if he brought it back, I'd sit or down him and pet him one time when he complied. Then teach him the enough or play time over command. He needs to know when you say it over that he needs to find something else to do. He may fecth and just play with the sock or toy, if you lucky.
I don't think he was being aggressive he asking to play or for more, did he bow his head up and down and lower the front part of his body? Its a discipline affair but not one that you would want to choke or prong for. You can use this desire to play and can't get enough of you in training. Instead of treats (sometimes) you can use the pat on the chest and you such a good dog!! Somes treats work best, you may not be sweet enough, if you can imagine that. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
You are in good shape you don't have a attention problem out of the dog, he thinks you are quite interesting!
