It just struck me that I should clarify; chickens and turkeys if free-ranged are actually omnivores - they'll eat anything that doesn't eat them! However, their poo is still safe for composting around edible crops where as dogs' and cats' poo is not. Go figure!

You can use dog doo... so long as it's not on plants people eat. I use dog compost around my rhodies. It takes a little longer to break down and I use sawdust in it as an identifier but works just fine as far as the plants are concerned.
I'm going to start out small scale, but will eventually have a few large piles going.
I'm wanting to do this for my lawn and future veggie garden. I've got the space to at least knock a dent out of the cost that I would have to purchase otherwise.

A word on veggie gardens. Start it in the fall before you intend to plant. Then let it sit until spring with some stuff to rot in like steer manure. Also Don't be afraid to bring in dirt if the soils where you live suck. My yard is all sand so I had to bring in about 20 yards of decent soil/compost and about a half ton of straw over 5 years to make it work.
The County composts, and will give you small quantities for free. You can also purchase larger quantities for a very nominal fee.
Folks have the same option here. Some cities pick up leaves & grass left at the curb and composts, then resells reather reasonably. I consider myself lucky to be able to compost on my own however! There is something very organic and satisfying about the process... I DO use the "pre-done" for clients on a regular basis.
