I quit eating drive thru burgers after learning that information. The food is perfectly safe, cooked to 170 degrees, probably delicious (hey, we all know it's delicious, soft and juicy!) but the idea of it, the image was too much for me.
So hey, I don't want to be sued here, so I'm stopping talking about this.
Liver and kidneys filter out quite a bit of nasty, too.
A raw diet without liver is lacking.
Tripe and intestines are full of crap.
Any part of a prey animal that you can get in a raw diet should be added.
Am I saying to go out and bust your arse Monday morning to find some lung and testicles? No, but every part of a prey animal has merit in a raw diet. If you can get it, feed it.
Entire prey animals are what dog's are designed to eat. They are built to deal with all the bacteria and overall yuck that comes along with such a diet.
When fed in the proportions that they come in an appropriate prey animal, there is no organ, meat, or bone that is bad. Thats a fact.
Lungs can't be any worse than the large intestine and contents (poop), animal hide with hair, cat poop, dog poop, rotten things, and the assorted gross things that dogs like to eat.
Many years ago when my husband went elk hunting, the Mexicans who were with the guide fried and ate lung slices.
How bad can lungs be if millions of people have been eating them in burgers, and then coming back for more?
So if the raw meat I give them is sourced from a reputable farmer it is pretty much going to be ok? I know the farmer and the farm, plus the butcher has gun dogs he feeds the same waste to, sorry if I come across a bit dim about this but it is all still new to me, so forgive me if I am going over old ground, the trainer I go to also advocates fruit, veg, pasta etc, infact pretty much anything thats left in the fridge at the end of the week, but I have found certain things like raw pulped veg and raw eggs blow their back doors off and give them the squits, so up until now they get whole carcasses and minced liver/kidney/heart, and occasionally some fresh cooked pasta if I have over done the portions, but I asked the question mostly because I want to be certain I'm not missing something important, and when the chap yesterday said about pig lights and lungs, I thought I would check it out, thank you for all the extra information, I do appreciate you taking the time to reply.
