There are "pills" you can purchase at the petstore which we've used in the past, and which do work well. However, I swear since we've switched to RAW the pH of the pee has been changed because we simply don't have anywhere near the number of "yellow" spots as we used to get. I have no idea if that is why, but there is definitely less yellow in my lawn!
A friend of mine uses the pills with great success. I feed raw and have also noticed that I don't have a problem with yellow grass.
I have two 75 lb. dogs. One male and one female. I was hell bent on maintaining my lawn so I went crazy and built a very large concrete dog run in my yard. I also have them respond to "go make" very well. I can bring them out and if I am in a hurry the "go make" command is a blessing.
it may seem a little extravagant to install 4" of concrete that's 30'x30' but the other issue I had was these very active dogs loved to run in the yard and where they weren't killing the grass with urine they were tearing it up by running and playing.
I heard the pills that neutralize the urine are bad for the dogs. The walk seems like the best way and you will certainly be doing your dog a tremendous service because the walk is vital for so many reasons. Good luck.
I put a 10' x 10' bed of pea gravel & small rocks in a corner of my yard, and taught my dog to go there. Started when I got her at 8 weeks, always brought her there by leash and told her "good potty" whenever she went there. She now heads there on her own to pee & poo. And my lawn is in great shape.
Agricultural gypsum. Available at your local home center or agriculture supply. Supposed to nuetralize harmfull effects of animal waste on lawns, as well as doing other good things for the soil. Works differently than lime; does not change soil ph. Also corrects the damaging effects of de-icing salts, in those areas where used.
Have to agree with others, give the dog one area to use as a toilet and have 'em go there. If they've got their own free fire zone, you won't have to clean up and repair your lawn.
