lol..yes down here in Canada we only have to deal with warm weather & fleas for about half the year.
trust me, at first i thought it was fleas too! I bathed him so much the first year it started im sure i did more harm than good.
I moved to a smaller city a few years ago...im going to say out to the country cause there was a mcdonalds at one end of the road and a cow farm at the other.
My Vet thinks that due to the high saturation of pollen etc where we were living (it was very rural....the backyard backed onto a forest then fields after that)he developed an allergy.
And that was 3 years ago...and right on cue every August to Sept since then he's itchy! And it's only been since I moved out there. Before that he didn't have the problem. I moved back to the "city" about 3 years ago, thought maybe it would stop, but it didn't. August came around and itchy itchy itchy.
And he doesn't do the normal "flea" type behaviour...biting at his tail or hind end, or that quick drop what you're doing and bite/scratch that area. It's just generally along his ribs that he scratches, with the occasional belly & undercarriage routine.
And a little bit of a rashy spot here & there. But they are just red & blotchy, not scratched raw or anything.
I remember when i first heard that dogs could have allergies I didn't quite believe it and kind of pshawed the whole thing.
It really makes me wonder how many dogs have this problem but the owners just don't know it's allergy related and ASSUME it's fleas.

Wendy,
Try the witch hazel to see if that works for Tucker, but I just wanted to mention this stuff as well: http://www.vetericyn.com/
Thanks for that info Joyce, it's always good to have some sort of product on hand that you know will work with the cuts & scrapes. Tucker gets alot of pad problems in the winter from chasing the ball, he skids along the ice and is always ending up with a cut pad! I'll keep that stuff in mind.

Edit reason: another thought came into my head.
