This morning, I went for my usual walk and my boy Kaiser was in a very good Heel by my side. As I turn a corner which houses a very aggressive Lab mix, the lab starts barking aggressively. So I pull him into a closer heel and as I turn around the corner and the lab has just jumped the wall and is out on the street , hackles up and charging my dog. I swiftly take my cane and whack the dog on the snout a few times and send it packing.
The next moment, the lady is all upset and crying, oh, you hit my dog, he is my baby, you are teasing my dog to make him jump the fence, are you a dog lover? why did you hit my dog, I curse that your dog should die.... alll this junk starts getting spewed.
I tried to explain to her that her dog jumped the wall and attacked mine (Luckily I acted swiftly and did not allow any bites) . She is hysterical at this point and her whole family joins in. She threatens me by saying I will report you to the blue cross(SPCA)... It was a bad bad experience.
Finally I said, I am going to F*ing train my dog every day right in front of your house, if your dogs jumps the fence again I will beat him with a bigger stick.
Ram, what an awful experience. It really is too bad that her dog got over the fence and certainly you had every right to protect you and your dog from attack. Good thing you did have your cane with you at the time.
You just have to let all that stuff she said go out the other ear, because you were only trying to prevent a really bad thing from happening.
So sorry that happened, but good on you for holding your own!
Ram, you did the right thing. Don't worry about her hysterics. But, I would report the incident to your animal control. Just do so in a calm manner and tell them precisely what happened and what followed the next day. Even offer to bring your dog and show them his training and behavior. That way, if she does report it, they'll have your report (hopefully) first and you won't be the one on the defensive.
What an awful interaction. But just remember Ram, she’s one sole individual (well maybe she has a family) “cursing” and wishing you harmful things. What she doesn’t realize is that she has now brought up the hackles and raised the wrath of “Real Dog Lovers” who train and protect their companions from under-exercised, ill-mannered and inappropriately contained “babies” like her. I don’t know…. seems like some mighty powerful karma to me.
Did she realize she was dealing with the “Mystic Dog Guru”?
I don’t think I'd give it too much thought. Take Elaine’s advice and know you did the right thing. And keep up the great distraction training. I don’t know about “faithfully” (that was the word you were going for there right?) training your dog every day right in front of her house, but every second day might work. Don’t you have to work through some “adverse reaction” Kaiser is now having in that area of town? (Screaming banshee comes to mind – I’ve never worked with that issue).
