my eight week old puppy does this air snap thing when i have the prey item out and hold it still but out of his reach. he isnt really striking it or lunging for it, but just as you say he is snapping at the air in my direction. kind of funny when the teeth hit together. could it be that he is a really hard dog, and thinks you are playing or that it is a game? sometimes when i speak a little firmer in tone and he is looking at my face, he will get excited and "air snap" also...who knows, pretty funny at such a young age though.
Nancy and travis - it almost sounds like a little anxiety from stress or excitement. Some pups will spin around, whine, and squirm too. My 11 week old pup does it too and if I go "shhh" or softly say "ohhkay", or pet him, he settles right down.
..my pup will sometimes do that when I try to give him a command right after we come in from playing, or if I try giving him too many commands in a row at his stage.
I'm not a behaviorist, but thought I would give my experience since my pup is the same age and doing the same sorta thing.
If death comes like a thief in the night, my dog and I wont be surprised.
