Hey guys, it's been awhile. I lurk here almost every day, just haven't posted.
Anyway, I was just curious about something. I have been sitting my aunt and uncles two dogs for a few days. A 16 month old male Golden Retriever and an 9 month old female Border collie. I didn't know the retriever was intact-as my white shepherd is intact as well. They met briefly on leash but of course everyone is separate at all times.
You gotta love family member's dogs who know no bounds. The retriever is rude and pushy, he is dominate towards other dogs and is a marking machine. He would attack my male. The retriever went for him when he was rolling around on his belly in the grass as we were talking in the front yard ( Both dogs on lead and situation was controlled without my dog even reacting ).
Well, my male hasn't had an accident in the house..in...well, ever. Today I caught him peeing on my carpet, just a quick squirt and he walked off. I corrected the behavior. He's nearly 2 and he doesn't lift his leg to mark, he still squats..but he only shot a tiny bit like it was a marking behavior. He's also been running around the yard and squatting over spots this other male is marking.
Is my male marking in my house? The two outsiders are leaving today. I'm back to square one, watching this dog like he's a pup. I am so hoping this behavior will right itself when the others are back at their own home.
I would have him tethered to you for a little while - not sure of the age of this dog - but maybe a week.
You can also put him near the spot that he marked and put him in a wait ( my "wait" command entails the dog staying where I put them, they can sit, down or stand but have to stay in the basic spot where I put them) until he gets his "marking" out of him.
